Chapter 13

Crossroads For The Allies

President Schmidt sat in the Oval Office reading his latest intelligence briefings. The siege of Paris was over, and his decision to commit half the Davidsons to the effort proved the correct measure. He was proud of the teens for stepping up after the tragic loss of their sister and Sergeant Rasooli.

“Mr. President, I have Israeli Prime Minister Yaakv on the line for you,” his assistant said as she entered the Oval Office.

“Prime Minister Yaakv,” the President said as he picked up the phone. “Thank you for taking my call. I’ve just read the latest report that Iran is pulling back their troops from Israel.”

“Yes, it seems like our actions have stymied their aggression,” the Israeli leader replied. “Maybe they're more intent on conquering China right now and need their resources there.”

“Maybe, a little of both,” said the American President. “What’s your plan from here?”

“We’re benefitting from collaborating with your scientists on the lasers,” he said. “We’ve fine-tuned our approach and should begin producing our first lasers soon. Thank you for allowing us special consideration in making our own versions and not relying on one of the three allied production facilities.”

“Your circumstances were unique,” said the President, understanding that Iran was occupying significant pieces of Israel and they needed some immediate technical support. Additionally, moving weapons into Israel with Iran’s warriors in their country was impossible.

“What’s the latest on the European and Chinese fronts?” asked the Israeli leader.

“In Europe. Russia has been advancing quickly under the protection of their recently unveiled crewless jets. They are pushing towards Germany, which they could reach soon. Things could quickly crumble if we don’t find a way to win back air superiority.”

“And how’s that looking?” Yaakv asked. “I saw you sent some telekinetic personnel to help reclaim Paris.”

“We did, but we don’t have enough to defend ourselves here and use them there. China can’t afford to send any, with Iran moving further into their country. We’re looking for other solutions and the deployment of more lasers. Our team has a few new tricks up their sleeves.”

“How about ground forces?” the Israeli PM asked. “Are you committing troops to both places?”

“We’re not sending troops to China right now, but we’ve sent one hundred and fifty thousand troops to Europe. I’m concerned it’s a death sentence as the constant air raids slice them apart. The Allied forces have lost three hundred thousand there to date. We’ve lost Warsaw, and there’s been no word from President Kaminski since its fall.”

“What’s your biggest fear in all this?” asked his Israeli counterpart, sensing deep frustration in the American President.

“The reality is that if China can’t withstand the coming wave from Iran and we can’t nullify those Russian jets, we’ll lose this damn war by the end of the year,” answered the President. “This planet will never be the same.”

“The planet is already not the same. It’s been turned upside down. Remember, however, it wasn’t long ago that everyone thought Iran would take America, bulldoze through Israel, and seize Jerusalem,” said the Israeli Prime Minister.
